Objective #2- Assessment
Assessment is an integral part of the teaching and learning process. The primary aim of
the assessment is to support students learning. Teachers use assessment to see the
effectiveness of instruction and give them knowledge how to guide the future learning. As
well, teacher will be knowledgeable about student’s performance in classroom and determine
which students require further instruction and define ways to improve students’ learning.
Also, assessment is beneficial for the students because it provides positive way by adjusting
their learning.
Primrose school uses balanced assessment for the kindergarten classroom. Balanced assessment
includes informal assessment such as observation and making note about children’s classroom
behavior. It also includes ongoing assessment for student’s progress in specific areas of learning
addressed by the curriculum. The learning domains of balanced assessment are: language and
literacy, mathematics, social emotional, science and technology, social studies, physical
development and health, and creative art and expression. The standards of this assessment are:
D- developing, P/M- proficient/ mastery, and N- not yet observe at school. The teacher assesses
children weekly. When the teacher evaluates the student, she puts the date of evaluation under
the letters. However, I looked at one child’s folder of this assessment, the teacher evaluated the
child the most as proficient/ mastery, some as developing, and few as – not yet observe at school.
At the end of assessment, the teacher made comment about child’s progress.
I have created two informal assessments, one for literacy including reading and writing
and one for math, and with guidance from the teacher, I implemented these assessments on one
child. These assessments and the samples of the child’s progress will be included on the
following pages.
These two assessments will help teacher to observe the students actively engaged in reading and
writing to be knowledgeable about the strengths and weakness for each student, so the teacher
can determine ways to assist student succeed.
