A news release is one of the most basic tools used by public relations practitioners to alert the media of news from an
organization or event. Please read the attached advertisement for the Open House for the Cohen-Florence-Levine Estates,
assisted living residences. From what we learned in class, reading your text and handouts provided, and doing background
research on the Estates (website) and Industry, please write a 2-page news release on this Open House event. You are the
Public Relations Manager.
Criteria for the release:
1. Proper news release format
• Proper release date
• Contact information
• Properly formatted headline/sub-headline with active verb
• Proper dateline
• Lead that answers key questions ( Who, What, When, Where, Why and How)
• Proper boilerplate with accurate info
• Proper spacing
2. Proper news release style
• Follows inverted pyramid
• Contains vivid quotes from respectable spokespeople (Must contain at least two quotes, one from the Executive Director
(make up) and another from a fictitious resident of the estates)
3. Compelling Message
• Creates audience interest in the event/news-What is your main message you want to get across?
4. News Outlets
• Appropriate choice of news outlet (research what news outlets will you send this release to?—use a separate sheet of
paper—do not include within the news release)
5. Proper grammar and spelling
