The Literature Review Assignment, Step Two: THE BIBLIOGRAPHY
The purpose of a literature review is to identify and critically analyze an area of published work on a
specific subject. In order to accomplish this, an author of a lit review must conduct careful research to
select a representative sample of writing, summarize and evaluate each item, compare them, and
synthesize their theoretical foundations and the information that is representative of the sample as
a whole. The final product will be organized thematically rather than sequentially, so start looking for
similarities and relationships early in your research process.

When gathering sources for your literature review, there are several guidelines that you need to
follow:
●You’ll need to find at least 10 acceptable sources. Acceptable sources include:
O Peer-reviewed journal articles
O Books or chapters from books (no textbooks)
O Encyclopedia articles (limit: 1)
O Popular press sources (limit: 2)
▪These must be longform investigative or critical articles about media texts or
the media industry.
▪They must be over 1,000 words and come from a reputable publication (one
that has professional editors).
▪They must be based on research – for example, someone else’s published
work, the author’s own in-depth analysis, or interviews.
oThings that may be allowed on a case-by-case basis:
▪polling data from an organization like the Pew Research Center or the General
Social Survey (limit: 1)
▪Documentary films (limit: 1)
●Media texts such as TV shows, “regular” newspaper articles, films, ads, etc. are not
acceptable. The point of this assignment is not for you to actually conduct your own analysis,
but rather to find out what other researchers and scholars have already written about your
topic (and then organize the pre-existing literature in a thematic way and report it back to
me).
●Sources that are not peer-reviewed or professionally edited will not be allowed. There are

no exceptions to this rule.
Where to get started:
●Look for information about finding peer-reviewed articles on the UWT Library’s
Communication Research Guide (“Articles” tab)
http://libguides.tacoma.uw.edu/content.php?pid=148750&sid=1942801
●Another place to find peer-reviewed items is through the Communication & Mass Media
Complete database (you must be logged into the UW system).
●For non-academic, popular press articles, you can look to the websites of reputable
publications that are known for in-depth reporting, like the New York Times, the Economist,
Salon, The New Yorker, or the Atlantic Monthly.
Notes to keep in mind:
●Your sources must be formatted using APA-style citations. I’m not kidding: these need to be
on point. If you’re using a citation machine, you still need to double-check the formatting.
Most of the machines are unreliable!
●Your citations must be alphabetized and reverse-indented.
●Include your finalized thesis statement at the very top of your first page, before your list of
sources.
●There is a degree of leeway in terms of changing sources. It’s possible that I might find some
of them unacceptable for this assignment. It’s also possible that once you’ve gotten farther
along in your research, you’ll realize that something just doesn’t work. In either of these
cases you’ll need to find substitutes for the eliminated sources.
●Make sure to carefully read this entire document before you submit your bibliography, and
be sure that you’ve met all of my expectations.
●Your bibliography must be submitted by 5:00 pm Friday, Feb 7.
You must upload it to Canvas (Assignments – (LR) Bibliography) as a PDF or Word doc ONLY!
